2018 Practical Test
Model Airplane in flight mode. Marking out of project includes the use of the Tri-Square and Marking Gauge. Practical elements include Trenching, Shaping of plane front which students can design themselves. There is also plenty of scope within the plane body for students to add their own design features. Item includes 44x18mm Fuselage, 44x12mm wing material, 9mm dowel and 100 x100mm base piece for stand.
What is ash wood?
Ash wood is the wood from Ash trees which are found throughout the world.
Properties and qualities
Ash wood is strong, durable and generally light in colour. It is coarse but the grain is fairly straight. As a result of its strength and durability, ash wood has an array of uses but is commonly used in the making of tools, furniture and frames.
Appearance
Ash wood is smooth to touch, and can come in varying shades of tone and lightness.

Beech is very hard and tough. It is also strong, with a close straight grain. Beech polishes well and withstands shocks and wear. beech is often used in the making of furniture, cabinetry, cooking utensils, tool handles, plywood and sports equipment. Even musical instruments: used for piano pin-blocks and drum manufacturing.

A simple book stand with many uses. Students will have to complete the dovetail joint, mortice and tenon joint & the hanuched mortice and tenon joint. Students will also have to master the technique of pilot drilling and screwing three parts to the main frame. The shaping of the top of the frame and the inclusion of a plywood centre could be explored by students. Item includes 44 x 20mm Redwood frame and ledge material, 30 x 18mm Redwood stand material, 6mm dowelling to form pivot with the stand and frame and a working drawing

Cherry has medium density, with good wood bending properties, medium strength and shock resistance, but low stiffness, and can be steam bent with care. Being hard and stable when dry the wood is very easy to stain and finish to an excellent surface. It is highly prized for furniture and interior joinery.
